In our last post, I stated that the answer to the above question is:
ANSWER: One worships God in Spirit and in Truth by: being sealed with the Holy Spirit (in Spirit) through Jesus Christ (in Truth), a worship that is lined up with the will of God. The issue is not where a person worships, but how and whom.
I followed this answer with a list of verses. Now I will explain my answer in greater detail. Let’s start with the last verse that was quoted:
“Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, And we are the People of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice: do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, As in the day of trial in the wilderness, When your fathers tested Me; They tried Me, though they saw My work. For forty years I was grieved with that generation, And said, ‘It is a people who go astray in their hearts, And they do not know My ways.’ So I swore in My wrath, They shall not enter My rest.’” Psalm 95:6-11
This verse gives a great example of worship. It explains God as our creator, our “Maker.” There is no mistake here that God should not be taken for granted. Worshiping God was and is an act of submission. Submitting to God is so hard for so many people. The Bible says that :
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man- and birds and four – footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.” Romans 1:18-27
And believe me folks, it gets even more interesting. So, why did I put all that in there? To show you that
- 1. All Mankind know who the one true God is
- 2. God has made it clear to them
- 3. Although they know God, they do not glorify Him as God
- Their hearts are darkened
Ok, getting back to the answer. We know that worship is an act of submission to God’s authority. Now, let’s get to the next verse:
“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:13
The Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity, which we will get into on the next verse. We are sealed by God with the Holy Spirit. This seal guarantees us our salvation. Worshiping in Spirit would be someone worshipping God who has been sealed by God with the Holy Spirit. This person will have the Holy Spirit residing in them. Let me explain from my own experiences:
I grew up in a household where I was dragged to church every Sunday. I believed in God, I believed in Jesus, and I believed in the Holy Spirit. As a child, I heard that if you were “saved,” then you were going to heaven. So, I ended up walking down the church isles at the age of seven. As a teenager, well, lets just say I wasn’t in church. I began reading the Bible when I enlisted in the Marine Corps. I guess that would make anyone start reading their Bible, right? I read it a few times a year, but didn’t take it seriously. If it was convenient for me to submit to God, then I would submit. Until I came to a point in my life where I really submitted my life to Jesus, I didn’t know what the Holy Spirit was. After that, I felt different, acted different, started to feel bad doing things I normally loved to do. I knew this was not me, but God in me. Yeah, I went to church before that and sang and worshipped God and kneeled down on the alter for prayer, but it was nothing until I worshiped in Spirit. Even know I can never explain it in mere words, but nobody can tell me that God is a myth because the proof is my existence, my being, my everyday life. I hope that helps.
So, most of us know that the word “Trinity” is not in the Bible. So, how can we say that God is one God in three parts: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit?
“If you love me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will Give you another Helper, that he may abide with you forever-the Spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows him; but you know him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you. A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” John 14:15-21
In this verse, the Spirit of Truth is referring to the Holy Spirit and to Jesus Christ. Jesus is speaking here. He says his disciples will know that He is in His Father (God) and they in Him and He in them. Here, he is speaking of when He will reappear to His disciples in spirit form. So, this verse is speaking of the coming of the Holy Spirit (The Day of Pentecost) and the resurrection of Jesus Christ (in Spirit form), while breaking down what we call “the Trinity.”
What does this have to do with your answer? It is there simply to state that the word “truth” in john 4:24 is specifically the worship of God through Jesus Christ. Expounding on the topic of the Trinity will help you better understand that.
“Jesus said to Him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6
So, let’s take a look at the question and the answer one more time:
- QUESTION: The bible says that the true worshippers of God will worship God in spirit and in truth…How does one worship God in Spirit?
- ANSWER: One worships God in Spirit and in Truth by: being sealed with the Holy Spirit (in Spirit) through Jesus Christ (in Truth), a worship that is lined up with the will of God. The issue is not where a person worships, but how and whom.
***Without the Holy Spirit, worship is a form of entertainment rather than an act of submission.
Till next time…
