The bible says that the true worshippers of God will worship God in spirit and in truth:
“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for he Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” …(John 4:23-24)
I received a comment to my poem, Despite, asking me the above question, How does one worship God in Spirit? When receiving a question that involves the Bible, I like to first take my time and read the chapter that the question is referencing and sometimes, even read the chapter before and after that chapter. This helps to not take God’s Word out of context. I must say I was very excited to get a question as a comment…but back to the topic at hand.
After some reading, I cross-referenced some verses to the above verse. All this means is backing up scripture with scripture. If you think a verse means something, then the bible will confirm that meaning. There’s no need to look on the internet, ask a friend, pray about it for weeks, make all these excuses…now I’m not saying that sitting down with your Pastor won’t help. But I am saying that you have to do the work for yourself. You can sit in church all day, everyday and listen to your Pastor quote scripture until your ears bleed, but it’s not going to help you grow closer to God if you don’t go through the Bible alone, or should I say, just you and God. So, cross referencing verses helps a lot if you are looking over the chapters that these verses come from as well. It is easy to take cross referenced verses out of context just to back up our “opinions” of a verse.
One thing I strongly recommend when researching verses is using a Study Bible. This helps a lot! A Study Bible gives you original meanings of words in the Bible, gives you references (verses) to look at, summaries of the meaning of certain groups of verses, and much more. In my case, I am currently using The Nelson Study Bible. I also have The MacArthur Study Bible. These are two great expounders of God’s word that have been researching the Bible for most of their lives. But once again, God’s Word should have the last…word.
Alright already! So, how does one worship God in Spirit? I have to answer this in it’s context: How does one worship God in Spirit and in truth?
ANSWER: One worships God in Spirit and in Truth by: being sealed with the Holy Spirit (in Spirit) through Jesus Christ (in Truth), a worship that is lined up with the will of God. The issue is not where a person worships, but how and whom.
So, how did I get this answer? Let’s go ahead and break it down verse by verse:
“If you love me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will Give you another Helper, that he may abide with you forever-the Spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows him; but you know him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you. A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” John 14:15-21
“Jesus said to Him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6
“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:13
“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving on another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:10
“Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, And we are the People of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice: do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, As in the day of trial in the wilderness, When your fathers tested Me; They tried Me, though they saw My work. For forty years I was grieved with that generation, And said, ‘It is a people who go astray in their hearts, And they do not know My ways.’ So I swore in My wrath, They shall not enter My rest.’” Psalm 95:6-11
I put the last one in there for all of us to take God and worship seriously. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is a loving God and also a God that holds all power in His hands. We should not forget that.
I am going to take a break now but will finish this topic in a couple hours. I need to rest my back. So, till next time…
